e_AT_START

Write position is at the start of the document.

e_AFTER_START_NO_TAG

Tokens emitted, but no XML tags yet.

e_IN_TAG

Write position is inside an unfinished opening tag.

e_FIRST_DATA_BETWEEN_TAGS

After an opening tag, before first data, mid‐line.

e_FIRST_DATA_AT_LINE_BETWEEN_TAGS

At column 0 after a tag, ready for indented content.

e_TRAILING_DATA_BETWEEN_TAGS

After data for the open tag, still mid‐line.

e_AT_END

This state indicates that the current write position of the formatter is immediately after the top‐level closing tag of the document.
